Tau is a mathematical constant that connects the half-width (radius) of a circle to its perimeter (circumference). For example, if a circle has a half-width of 1, then it has a perimeter of 6.283185… or τ. This design of tau was popularized by Bob Palais in his now infamous article “Pi Is Wrong!”.
